Flooding is a threat to homeowners and renters nationwide. The Atlantic Coast hurricane season has begun. And Texas and Oklahoma already have been battered by storms that inflicted severe flooding.
In 2014, flooding caused damage in all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., and Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
And flood damage can be costly. From 2008 to 2012, the average residential flood claim amounted to more than $38,000, according to the government’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
